Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," the selector added.
"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Injury History
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
