British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.
The location, pinpointed through intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated.
UK warplanes have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I must thank every member of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."
In December, the US military carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
