European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of tying federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
