Greek Police Strengthen Protection In Response to Demonstrations Against Israel Passenger Liner

Hellenic authorities have dramatically enhanced security measures at two major ports in an initiative to keep protesters from reaching a passenger ship transporting visitors from Israel on an eleven-day Mediterranean journey.

Latest Demonstrations Prompt Increased Protection

The heightened security at Patras and Katakolo followed previous protests when the MS Crown Iris docked at Kalamata recently. Earlier, travelers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the liner was compelled to change course to Cyprus after community members staged a protest on the Aegean isle of Syros.

"In spite of the peace agreement, Israel is still continuing its military operations in Gaza," remarked Christina Lada who participated in the Kalamata protest. "Innocent, non-combatant people are being fatally injured."

Passenger Encounter and Public Opinion

From the upper deck, travelers observed as protesters in Kalamata yelled: "You need the police, you're not welcome in Greece."

A leading campaigner, who dedicated the summer to coordinating anti-war protests across Greece, asserted: "Those Israelis who endorse the actions of their government aren't embraced here."

International Background and Foreign Ties

A foreign policy analyst explained: "Due to close location and our longstanding relationships with the Middle East, the average Greek is more responsive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the average central or north European."

"Greece is in a difficult position," he continued. "Israel is significantly more crucial for us as an partner than it is for most European states."

Commercial and Travel Implications

Official data reveal that in excess of 600,000 Israeli visitors came to Greece in 2024, with forecasts of increased visitation this year. This considerable inflow highlights the significantly enhanced ties between the both states since the 1980s, when Greek leadership maintained a strongly supportive position toward Palestine.

Strategic Alliance and Geographic Considerations

From Athens' perspective, Israel constitutes not only a crucial counterweight to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also offers the additional advantage of better official channels to Washington.

"Greece is not going to endanger its ties with Israel," commented Filis. "But from a humanitarian perspective we must be more embracing, more measured, more resolved to demonstrate the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."

Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Reaction

The extent of the Greek protest movement has caught Israel off guard. In recent months, the state's external affairs office counseled tourists to maintain a low profile, while local media referred to Athens as a "paradise lost" due to political graffiti emerging on buildings in the urban center.

The head official of the Hebrew Communities Council in Greece expressed concern: "Of course we're worried. The kind of discourse we're hearing can quickly turn into antisemitic."

Future Events and Requests

Increasingly, protesters have focused on Athens' tight relationships with Israel. As many as 5,000 people recently journeyed to Crete to request the shutdown of the Souda Bay military facility, a NATO establishment that following the start of conflict in Gaza has served as a key refuelling post for US naval vessels, military jets and ships headed to Israel.

"We have achieved successes," stated an anti-racist coordinator. "Our main demand, currently, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
