Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
